It’s wise to know the color of the automotive fluids in your European automobile. This makes it easier to identify which fluid is leaking if you end up with spots on your garage floor. European Fix warns that in some cases, it may not be safe to drive your automobile depending on which fluid is leaking out of it.
Blue
It’s generally safe to drive your European automobile if it is leaking blue fluid. The washing solution that you use to wash your windshield while you’re in motion is blue. This is most likely the fluid that is leaking if the color is blue.
Brown
It’s generally unsafe to drive your European automobile if it is leaking brown fluid. The fluid that is leaking out of the vehicle is either oil, differential oil, brake fluid, or old transmission fluid. All of these fluids are crucial to the operation of your automobile.
Clear
If the clear fluid leaking from your automobile smells like fuel, it is unsafe to drive it. If it doesn’t have any odor to it, it is either condensation dripping from the air conditioner or out of the tailpipe. You can drive your automobile in this case.
Green
Green, green-blue, or blue-green fluid is usually antifreeze/coolant. It’s not a good idea to drive your European automobile if it is leaking coolant. You run the risk of overheating the car or crossover and causing additional engine damage.
Orange
Orange fluid leaking from the automobile is either coolant filled with rust or aging transmission fluid. Again, we don’t recommend driving your European automobile if it has a coolant leak. It’s not a good idea to drive it if it has a transmission leak, either, as you can damage the transmission by overheating it.
Red
Healthy transmission fluid is red. It will drip from underneath your automobile near the center if it is leaking. The power steering fluid is also red. It will drip underneath the engine. Although most brake fluid is light brown, there are some brands out there that are red. Antifreeze/coolant can also be red. This can make identifying the fluid leak a bit confusing.
Yellow
Finally, antifreeze/coolant is sometimes yellow or yellow-green. New brake fluid can be such a light brown that it looks yellow or amber.
